Oman proposal for joint Hormuz management rejected by Iran

Oman has offered Iran a regional mechanism to jointly manage the Strait of Hormuz, based on a voluntary‑fee model similar to the Strait of Malacca. The plan would fund navigation safety, environmental protection and search‑and‑rescue services without giving Tehran exclusive control. Iran’s deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the Omani proposal does not meet Tehran’s security concerns and that it “has no chance of success”, effectively rejecting it. Gulf states have voiced support for the initiative, while U.S. President Donald Trump described the talks as “good” but warned that American strikes could resume if negotiations fail. The strait carries about one‑fifth of global oil and LNG shipments, making its governance a matter of international energy security.
