Arab League lifts sanctions on Syria as new trade ties with Ukraine emerge

The Arab League has decided to lift all political, economic, and social sanctions imposed on the Syrian state and its institutions. According to Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, while state-level sanctions are being removed to support economic recovery and reconstruction, measures against specific officials of the former government will remain in place. This decision follows the restoration of Syria’s membership in the League in May 2023. Notably, these measures are separate from existing sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union.

In a separate economic development, the Syrian Ministry of Economy and Industry has established the Syrian-Ukrainian Business Council. Led by Muhammad Ziadiya, the council is designated as the sole accredited body representing the Syrian side in relations with Ukraine. The initiative aims to expand trade, highlight investment opportunities, and facilitate communication between the business communities of both nations. This move follows a diplomatic rapprochement, including a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Damascus in April 2026.
