Arab League ministers call for action on regional security and sovereignty

At the 166th ordinary session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level, officials emphasized a shift from merely stating positions to taking concrete actions regarding regional crises. Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy noted a “real and serious desire” for collective action amidst international instability and attempts to reshape the region through force.

Key discussions focused on Palestinian rights in Jerusalem, with the League working to document Israeli violations and proposing a fund and observatory to present these actions to the international community. The session also addressed security threats in the Arabian Gulf, Iranian interference in Arab states, and the necessity of ensuring freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz.

Regarding Libya, Secretary-General Fahmy met with acting Foreign Minister Taher Al-Baour to reaffirm the League’s commitment to Libya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The discussions centered on supporting a Libyan-led political process to unify state institutions and facilitate national elections, while coordinating with the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.
