Arab nations observe Arab Agriculture Day focusing on rangeland sustainability
The Arab Organization for Agricultural Development is celebrating Arab Agriculture Day 2026, focusing on the theme of sustainable rangeland management as a pillar for regional food security and sustainable development. This year's observance coincides with the anniversary of the organization's founding in Khartoum, Sudan, in 1972.
Natural pastures cover approximately 438.73 million hectares across the Arab region, accounting for about 32.7% of its total geographic area. These lands are vital for supporting livestock, protecting soil and water, and maintaining biodiversity. However, these resources face significant threats from climate change, water scarcity, drought, desertification, and land degradation.
Oman is participating in the celebrations by highlighting its efforts to manage diverse ecosystems, ranging from mountainous to desert environments. The Sultanate emphasizes the use of modern technologies to monitor pasture health and adheres to legal frameworks, such as Royal Decree No. 8/2003, to protect natural pastures from overgrazing and ensure they remain a public good.
