Araban historical sites and agricultural heritage highlighted
Hasan Altun, President of the Araban Chamber of Agriculture and Garlic Producers Association, highlighted the historical and agricultural significance of the Araban Plain in Gaziantep. He noted that the 17th-century traveler Evliya Çelebi praised the region, then known as ‘Raban’, in his famous work ‘Seyahatname’, describing its agricultural wealth and fertile lands fed by the Euphrates River.
Altun also discussed the historical importance of Araban Castle, which dates back to the Bronze Age and sits atop a 35-meter prehistoric mound. While the castle served as a significant center during the 11th and 12th centuries, its walls have largely been depleted over time due to the use of its stones for local construction. Additionally, Altun reported that the Inner Castle Mosque, a historically significant structure located at the top of the castle, sustained damage during the February 6 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes.
