Arabian Gulf Steel Industries achieves low carbon footprint for rebar

Arabian Gulf Steel Industries (AGSI), the largest private steelmaker and recycler in the UAE, has achieved a verified low carbon footprint for its rebar production. According to a CARES UK verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), the reinforcing bar produced at AGSI’s KEZAD facility in Abu Dhabi has a cradle-to-gate carbon footprint of 139 kg of CO2 equivalent per tonne.

This figure is significantly lower than the typical 600 to 700 kg per tonne associated with scrap-based rebar, and also falls below the nearest comparable publicly available EPD figure of 300 kg CO2e per tonne. Additionally, AGSI’s operations in Sharjah recorded a footprint of 218 kg CO2e per tonne.

The achievement was announced at the KEZAD Group headquarters and highlights the integration of AGSI’s manufacturing, KEZAD’s industrial infrastructure, and independent verification through the CARES EPD programme. The development aims to provide construction sector stakeholders with verified product-level carbon data to manage embodied carbon.
