Aracena exhumation uncovers remains of 17 Civil War victims

Exhumation efforts at the San Sebastián cemetery in Aracena, Huelva, have recovered the remains of 17 individuals killed during the repression of the Spanish Civil War. Initial anthropological analysis indicates the recovered remains are males of varying ages.

This operation represents the first phase of a larger excavation project. Experts estimate that approximately 140 bodies may be located in the mass grave, though some initial estimates suggested the number could reach 180.

To identify the victims, genetic samples have been collected from more than 50 relatives in Aracena and surrounding municipalities. These samples will be sent to the University of Granada to undergo DNA testing and comparison with the recovered remains.

The project is coordinated by the municipal Heritage area and funded by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) using funds from the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory. Local authorities have expressed the importance of the work in providing dignified burials and addressing historical debts to the victims and their families.
