Arad Tribunal orders renaming of antisemitic street in Vladimirescu

The Arad Tribunal has ordered the local administration of Vladimirescu commune to rename Nicolae Paulescu Street in the village of Mândruloc. The ruling follows a lawsuit filed by the Association for the Prevention and Combat of Antisemitism and Legionarism, which argued that the name is considered antisemitic.

The court's decision requires the local council to issue a new resolution providing a name that complies with legal norms. However, the ruling is not yet final, and there is a 15-day window for appeal.

Mihai Mag, the mayor of Vladimirescu, announced intentions to appeal the decision to avoid setting a precedent. Mag expressed concern that changing the name could lead to similar demands for other streets, such as Octavian Goga Street, which would affect approximately 100 households and businesses requiring updated documentation. He argued against judging historical figures by modern standards.
