ARAG traffic‑law specialist Jan Kemperdiek explained the rules that drivers, cyclists and pedestrians must follow at red and yellow traffic signals. A red‑light breach is recorded as soon as a vehicle crosses the stop line while the light shows red, regardless of whether an accident occurs. Penalties depend on the circumstances: a brief red‑light crossing (under one second) incurs a minimum fine of €90 and one point in the driver‑rating register, while a qualified violation that endangers others or causes damage leads to fines of €320‑€360, two points and a one‑month driving ban.

The yellow phase signals drivers to stop and wait for green. Misjudging the yellow and entering the intersection at red can also result in a violation. Kemperdiek advises motorists to brake early rather than attempt a rapid crossing, noting that abrupt full stops can create rear‑end collision risks. The German road traffic regulations define the assessment criteria, including the duration the red signal has been displayed and the exact point where the vehicle crosses the stop line.
