Aragón requests use of EU fund surpluses for local services

The Government of Aragón has formally requested that the Spanish Ministry of Finance allow the region to retain and repurpose unused funds from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR).

Roberto Bermúdez de Castro, the regional Minister of Finance, Interior, and Public Administration, sent a letter proposing that these surpluses be directed toward priority investments in housing, healthcare infrastructure, and the climate control of educational centers. The regional executive argues that these resources, which were already territorially assigned to Aragón, should remain in the community to drive economic and social impact rather than being returned to the central government.

Bermúdez de Castro noted that while the regional government has worked to maximize fund execution and meet most established objectives, surpluses have emerged due to increased efficiency, lack of demand, or unforeseen circumstances. This request follows a previous inquiry made to the General Secretariat of European Funds in September, to which the regional government has not yet received a response.
