Aragon attracts massive data center investments

Aragon is experiencing a significant surge in data center investments, positioning the region as a major digital hub in southern Europe. Official projects represent investments exceeding 33.4 billion euros, with total announced volumes reaching approximately 70 billion euros. The construction phase, projected between 2024 and 2033, is estimated to generate over 8 billion euros in Gross Value Added and create roughly 143,536 full-time equivalent jobs, with peak activity expected in 2028.

Major global players including Amazon, Microsoft, and Blackstone, alongside local groups like Forestalia and SAMCA, are driving this expansion. While regional institutions view these projects as economic successes, some analyses raise questions regarding the control of productive resources and the impact on rural territories. A report by the Basilio Paraíso Foundation, produced in collaboration with Microsoft, suggests a strategy to ensure long-term local benefits through strengthening supply chains, addressing talent challenges, and ensuring social returns to the territory.
