Aragon dental hygienists and Haleon launch Alzheimer’s oral health guide
The Professional College of Dental Hygienists of Aragon, in collaboration with the consumer healthcare company Haleon, has launched the ‘Oral Health Education Guide for People with Alzheimer’s Disease’. Released in observance of World Alzheimer’s Day, the initiative aims to address the specific oral health challenges faced by individuals with cognitive impairment.
Patients with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia often struggle with self-care, leading to higher rates of dental caries and periodontal disease. Research indicates a significant link between oral health and cognitive decline; specifically, individuals with periodontitis face a 1.7 times higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s-type dementia. Post-mortem studies have even identified oral pathogens that may accelerate cognitive deterioration.
The guide emphasizes the critical role of caregivers and family members in maintaining the oral hygiene of patients. Proper dental care is essential not only for oral health but also to prevent systemic complications such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, respiratory issues, and cancer, which can be exacerbated by oral bacteria.
