Aragon Government faces hate‑crime investigations over cut to migrant minors’ allowance

The regional government of Aragon, led by Vice President Alejandro Nolasco, decided to remove a weekly cash allowance for minors under state protection who are migrants, while keeping the payment for Spanish nationals. The measure was applied to three migrant reception centres in Peralta de Alcofea, Torrero and Movera.

The Ministry of Youth and Childhood referred the policy to the State Prosecutor, prompting the specialised Child Prosecutor’s Office and the Hate‑Crime Prosecutor’s Office to open investigations into possible discrimination and hate‑crime offences. Prosecutor Teresa Gisbert described the decision as discriminatory, and the government delegate in Aragon, Fernando Beltrán, called the investigations “extremely serious”. Additional complaints were filed by the regional party Chunta Aragonesista, alleging prevarication and hate‑crime violations.

The legal scrutiny threatens to nullify the policy and may lead to civil or criminal proceedings against the Aragon executive.
