Aragon government seeks energy hub flexibility to attract industry
The Government of Aragon has requested “maximum flexibility” from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition regarding the Nudo Mudéjar energy hub. The regional administration aims to use the hub to attract new industries and stimulate job creation in the area.
This request follows a reduction in the storage capacity originally planned for the project, which initially envisioned a generation capacity of 1,202 MW. The modification has released a portion of the consumption capacity, which Aragon officials argue should be utilized to supply new industrial projects. Eva Valle, the Minister of Economy, Competitiveness, and Employment, stated that the government is working to identify and resolve bottlenecks to encourage industrial relocation to these regions.
To support this transition, the regional government has proposed designating industrial projects in just transition areas as Strategic Investment Projects. They are also calling for energy projects to be declared a priority and for greater flexibility in allowed technologies, such as reversible storage. The initiative seeks to transform infrastructure originally designed for the energy transition and the closure of the Andorra Thermal Power Plant into a driver for new productive activities.
