Aragon officials demand return of Sijena Monastery murals
The Government of Aragon has renewed its demand for the return of the mural paintings from the Monastery of Sijena, marking the 90th anniversary of their removal in 1936. During an event organized by the 'Plataforma Sijena Sí' in Villanueva de Sijena, Pedro Olloqui, the Director General of Culture and Cultural Heritage for Aragon, stated that the region will recover its cultural rights through the return of these works.
Olloqui characterized the 1936 removal by Catalan institutional workers as an act of appropriation. He emphasized that the Aragonese society has remained united in this claim for nearly a century. The official expressed frustration with what he described as obstructive attitudes from certain Catalan independence sectors that have hindered the fulfillment of judicial rulings regarding the restitution of the heritage.
