Las Peñas de Riglos wildfire stabilized in Aragon

The forest fire at Las Peñas de Riglos in Huesca, Aragon, has been stabilized after ten days of intense activity. While the total affected perimeter reaches 18,400 hectares, satellite measurements indicate that approximately 14,500 hectares have been effectively burned.

Following the stabilization, authorities have begun allowing residents to return to their homes. Approximately 339 residents from five municipalities—Santa María de la Peña, Salinas de Jaca, Villalangua, Larués, and Bailo—have been cleared to return immediately. Other residents in areas such as Centenero, Ena, and Botaya are also being evaluated for return. However, residents in Arbués and Alastuey must wait for further inspections due to the detection of smoke in those areas.

The firefighting effort involved a historic deployment of resources, including nearly 1,000 personnel and dozens of aerial means at its peak. The Military Emergencies Unit (UME) has begun withdrawing equipment from the zone as the operation scales down. Despite the favorable evolution and recent rainfall, authorities maintain a presence to monitor remaining hot spots and continue restrictions on access to certain perimeter zones.
