Aragon urges France to fund Pau-Canfranc-Zaragoza rail reopening
The Government of Aragon has called on the French government to commit the necessary funding to reopen the Pau-Canfranc-Zaragoza international railway line. During a meeting in Canfranc to present findings on territorial synergies, David Sánchez Fraile, the Director General of Transport for Aragon, emphasized that while Aragon is working closely with the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, French investment is essential to recover this cross-border connection.
Alain Rousset, President of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, participated in the event, which highlighted the economic and social opportunities the rail link could provide for territories on both sides of the Pyrenees. The discussions focused on tourism, sustainable mobility, and freight transport.
Studies funded by the Connecting Europe Facility have established a projected reopening window between 2032 and 2035. The project aims to integrate the railway as a driver for regional development, encompassing culture, housing, employment, and training.
