Aragonese research team wins national award for breast cancer radiotherapy study

A multidisciplinary team from Aragon has received a national award for their research on intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) in patients with low-risk early-stage breast cancer. The study was presented at the 44th Congress of the Spanish Society of Senology and Breast Pathology in Malaga.

The research, which includes specialists from the Miguel Servet University Hospital in Zaragoza and the IIS Aragon Technological Innovation in Cancer group, analyzes a decade of data from 1,222 women treated between 2015 and 2025. This represents one of the most extensive series of its kind in Spain.

IORT is a technique that allows a single dose of radiation to be administered during surgical intervention. After the tumor is removed through conservative surgery, radiation is applied directly to the tumor bed. This approach targets the area with the highest risk of recurrence, potentially reducing or eliminating the need for subsequent external radiotherapy sessions.
