Araguaína man sentenced to 20 years for torturing and raping grandmother

A man has been sentenced to 20 years and four months in prison following the torture, rape, and attempted robbery of his 83-year-old grandmother in Araguaína. The court accepted the charges brought by the Public Ministry of Tocantins (MPTO).

The incident occurred in May of this year within the victim's residence. According to the prosecution, the man entered the home and demanded money from the elderly woman, during which time she was physically assaulted, dragged by her hair, and subjected to sexual violence. The victim managed to escape the house to seek assistance.

Prosecutor Matheus Eurico Borges Carneiro noted the lasting psychological trauma suffered by the victim, including insomnia and fear of being alone. The sentence, which establishes an initial closed prison regime, covers the crimes of torture, rape, and attempted robbery. The defendant was acquitted of qualified bodily injury and aggravated threats based on the principle of absorption. The first-instance sentence is subject to appeal, and preventive detention remains in effect.
