Arashan sheep breed triggers massive price surge in Kyrgyzstan

A new giant sheep breed in Kyrgyzstan, known as the Arashan, has triggered a speculative frenzy across Central Asia due to skyrocketing prices. Officially registered in April 2021, the breed has gained viral popularity on social media, leading to extraordinary sales.

Reports indicate that a single Arashan lamb, named ‘Antibiotik’, was recently sold to a Kazakhstani breeder for an estimated one million dollars. Other high-value transactions include a breeding ram sold for $150,000 in 2023, while some young rams have been valued at $500,000 at livestock fairs.

Mirlan Satibekov, president of the Kyrgyz Public Association of Sheep Breeders, attributes the breed's value to its massive size, rapid growth, and durability in harsh climates. The sheep are characterized by distinct ‘Roman noses’, long ears, and thick tails. They are primarily raised for meat, which is a staple in Central Asian diets, and large breeding rams are used to improve the size and market value of future generations.
