Arauca Mayor Reports Falling Water Levels After Flood Breach Closed
Mayor Juan Qüenza of Arauca announced on Facebook that the closure of the open breach in the Arauca River at El Cubarro is already lowering water levels in several flooded neighborhoods. Residents of areas such as Manhattan, El Recreo, 20 de Abril, Villa Linda, Piquetierra, Jerusalén and Llano Alto reported a gradual decline, while other zones like Villa Esperanza and Puerto Alegre still see stable or high water.
The breach, initially over 300 metres wide, was sealed using thousands of sandbags placed with the participation of the public force, relief agencies, volunteers and local officials. Authorities continue to monitor the river, assess damage, catalog affected families and provide humanitarian assistance as rainfall and upstream inflows could still influence flooding.
