Arauco controls 80% of productive land in Puerto Libertad, Argentina
In the municipality of Puerto Libertad, located in the Iguazú department of Misiones, Argentina, the Chilean multinational Arauco controls 80 percent of the productive lands. This high level of land concentration has sparked discussions regarding the modification of the Land Law and the implications of foreign ownership on local communities.
Historical analysis indicates that state and international policies have facilitated this expansion. The landscape in the region is characterized by vast, homogeneous pine plantations that dominate the terrain, contrasting with the remaining fragments of the Misiones jungle. Additionally, the Urugua-í stream dam, inaugurated in 1994, flooded 10,000 hectares of forest and plantations, further altering the local environment.
