Brazil blood centers issue urgent alerts over critical supply shortages
Multiple blood centers across Brazil are reporting critical shortages in blood supplies, prompting urgent appeals for donors. In São Paulo, the Fundação Pró-Sangue has warned that stocks for O positive, O negative, A negative, and B negative types have reached alarming levels. The shortage of O negative blood is particularly concerning as it is the universal donor type essential for emergency situations.
In Santa Catarina, HEMOSC is also reporting reduced levels of O positive and O negative blood, citing heavy rains as a contributing factor to the decline in donations. Meanwhile, in Rio de Janeiro, Hospital Municipal Pedro II is conducting specific donation drives to support the public hospital network.
Experts attribute the decline in donations to several factors, including seasonal temperature drops and medical restrictions following vaccinations. Specifically, individuals must wait four weeks after receiving a measles vaccine and 48 hours after a flu vaccine before they are eligible to donate. To combat the shortage, some municipalities, such as Araucária, are providing free transportation to facilitate the movement of volunteers to collection centers.
