Aravind Eye Hospital doctors find ectopic tooth in teenager's eyelid
Doctors at the Aravind Eye Hospital in India have discovered a fully formed canine tooth located within the eyelid of a 16-year-old boy. The patient had noticed swelling and small white bumps under his eyebrow for several months, though he experienced no significant vision impairment.
Following a computed tomography (CT) scan, medical professionals identified the structure as an ectopic tooth—a mature canine that developed in an atypical location. While ectopic teeth have been documented in the maxillary sinus or nasal cavity, Dr. Meghana Tanwar stated that this is the first recorded instance of such a tooth appearing in the upper orbit globally.
The case has been documented in the medical journal Ophthalmology after the successful surgical removal of the tooth.
