Arbeiterwohlfahrt criticizes German income tax reform plans

The Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO) has criticized a proposed income tax reform draft presented by Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil, alleging it increases inequality between high-income and middle-to-low-income families.

AWO President Michael Groß stated that the plan disproportionately favors wealthy households. According to AWO calculations, the monthly financial advantage for high-income families with children is projected to grow from 127 euros to 151 euros by 2028. Over the first 18 years of a child's life, this cumulative advantage is estimated to rise from approximately 5,000 euros to over 32,000 euros.

The organization further noted that while wealthy families receive greater relief, the 25-euro 'Kindersofortzuschlag' for low-income households will be abolished, and child benefits (Kindergeld) will only increase by a total of 13 euros. The AWO is calling for these funds to be redirected toward poverty reduction and a more equitable social state.
