Albania and Serbia clash over Ibar river and Kosovo status FAST-MOVING
Diplomatic tensions have escalated between Albania and Serbia following statements by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić regarding the potential diversion of the Ibar river. Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama responded by asserting that Kosovo is a sovereign state and that its territory and natural resources do not belong to Serbia. Rama further denied any 'Greater Albania' ambitions, stating that Albania has no territorial claims against Serbia.
Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Gjurić countered these claims, accusing the government of Albin Kurti of systematically destroying Serbian properties along the shores of Lake Gazivoda and the Ibar river. Gjurić argued that the discussion regarding the Ibar is a diversion from the reality of ethnic discrimination against the Serbian community in Kosovo. He emphasized that Serbia's position is based on its Constitution, international law, and UN Resolution 1244.
In response, Serbian Minister Nemanja Starović criticized the Albanian leadership for ignoring the 2013 Brussels Agreement and the status of the Association of Serb Municipalities. He maintained that Kosovo remains within Serbia's UN-recognized borders. Meanwhile, Albanian Foreign Minister Ferit Hoxha emphasized that water resources should not be used as instruments of threat or punishment, advocating for regional cooperation and European integration.
