Arbitrator sets rent increases for 3,600 Swedish households

An arbitrator has set rent increases for 2027 for more than 3,600 privately owned households across nine municipalities in western Sweden. The decision mandates increases ranging between 2.60% and 2.90% starting January 1, 2027.

The Tenants Association (Hyresgästföreningen) has expressed strong criticism of the ruling, arguing that the increases are higher than what the current economic situation justifies. Negotiating chief Sofi Bringsoniou stated that the decision places undue pressure on tenants already facing financial difficulties.

The dispute arose after Fastighetsägarna GFR, representing various private landlords, left the negotiating table in 13 municipalities in the West Sweden region. Rather than reaching a local agreement, the landlords opted to have an arbitrator, Erik Ferlin, determine the rent levels. The Tenants Association had previously rejected rent demands ranging from 3.90% to 4.90%.
