Arboviruses in Brazil: Experts warn of risks in dengue, zika, and Oropouche

Health experts are warning about the similarities between various arboviruses, including dengue, zika, chikungunya, and Oropouche, which can make self-diagnosis difficult. Symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and malaise are common across these diseases, but their risks and complications differ significantly.

Infectious disease specialist Rodolpho Dantas emphasizes that a reduction in fever does not necessarily indicate improvement. In the case of dengue, the period between the third and fifth day is particularly critical. During this phase, a patient may experience circulatory shock due to fluid leaking from blood vessels, which can lead to severe symptoms such as excessive drowsiness, intense abdominal pain, shortness of breath, low blood pressure, and bleeding.

Prevention measures include using insect repellent, utilizing mosquito nets, and eliminating standing water where mosquitoes breed. Medical professionals advise against self-medication and stress the importance of clinical evaluation and testing to correctly identify the specific virus and manage the patient's condition.
