Arcachon Mayor Yves Foulon convicted for threats against political opponent
Yves Foulon, the mayor of Arcachon, has been convicted by the Bordeaux criminal court for threats and violence directed at his primary municipal election opponent, Vital Baude.
The conviction stems from an incident on March 15, the morning of the first round of municipal elections. Foulon was filmed without his knowledge using insults and making threats against Baude, an environmentalist candidate. The court ordered Foulon to pay a total fine of 10,000 euros, with 5,000 euros suspended, plus an additional 30 euros for insults. He was also ordered to pay 2,500 euros to Baude for damages.
The sentence was lower than the prosecution's request for a four-month suspended prison sentence. The prosecutor had characterized the case as one of the most serious instances of attacks against elected officials handled by the Bordeaux prosecutor's office.
Foulon's legal counsel described the ruling as a 'judgment of appeasement' that may prevent an appeal. However, Vital Baude has not ruled out appealing the decision, noting the implications for national jurisprudence.
