Arcadia earthquake: 4.5 magnitude tremor hits near Astros
A 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Arcadia region of Greece in the early hours of Saturday, August 29, 2026. The tremor occurred at approximately 02:55 and was centered near the town of Astros in the North Kynouria municipality, roughly 4 kilometers northeast of the town.
The earthquake was felt across a wide geographic area, including parts of the Peloponnese such as Nafplio, Tripoli, and Argos, as well as in Attica. While the magnitude was characterized as “weak,” the timing of the event caused significant concern among residents who were at home.
Seismological data showed slight variations between monitoring agencies. The Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens reported a magnitude of 4.5 with a focal depth of approximately 63.9 kilometers. The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) estimated a magnitude of 4.6, placing the epicenter roughly 28 kilometers south of Argos with a focal depth of 67 kilometers.
No immediate reports of injuries or significant structural damage have been confirmed. Seismologists continue to monitor the area for potential aftershocks.
