ArcelorMittal plant in João Monlevade celebrates 91 years

The ArcelorMittal steel plant in João Monlevade, Brazil, is celebrating 91 years of operation. Construction of the facility began in 1935, with pig iron production starting in 1937 and steel production following in 1938.

Originally established by Companhia Siderúrgica Belgo-Mineira, the plant has played a significant role in the economic and social development of the region. Historical milestones include the implementation of South America’s first sintering plant in 1948 and Latin America’s first steelworks in 1957.

Currently, the facility is ArcelorMittal’s only integrated plant for long steel in Brazil, with an annual production capacity of 1.2 million tons. It produces high-value materials such as tire cord, auto parts, fasteners, steel cables, and welding products. In 2022, the unit received the ResponsibleSteel™ certification, recognizing its practices in governance, human rights, worker safety, decarbonization, and resource management.
