ArcelorMittal to end primary steel production in Duisburg
ArcelorMittal has announced it will cease primary steel production at its Duisburg site by October 2027. The decision includes the complete closure of the Duisburg steelworks and the cessation of operations at the bloom mill.
The closure is expected to affect approximately 550 employees, out of the roughly 800 currently working at the bloom mill. While the wire rod mill is intended to remain operational, it will rely on semi-finished products sourced from other ArcelorMittal locations or external producers.
The company's withdrawal follows challenges regarding the profitability of industrial production in Germany, particularly concerning the transition to green steel production despite available subsidies.
