Fincantieri shipyard accident in Ancona leaves one dead and one critically injured

A fatal industrial accident occurred at the Fincantieri shipyard in Ancona on the night of September 29, 2026. A sudden flash fire struck two workers from a subcontracting company while they were performing tasks on a ship inside a warehouse.

One victim, a 55-year-old Tunisian man, died from severe burns. The second worker, a 27-to-29-year-old man from Bangladesh, sustained critical injuries and was transferred to a specialized burn center in Pisa. Investigators, including the scientific police and maritime authorities, are examining the cause of the fire, with a primary hypothesis being a spark or acetylene leak during metal cutting operations.

In response to the tragedy, labor unions Fim, Fiom, and Uilm have proclaimed an eight-hour strike across Fincantieri sites, including Monfalcone. The unions have criticized the current subcontracting model, arguing it compromises worker safety and training, and are calling for stricter oversight and the establishment of a specific crime for workplace homicide.
