Arcep clarifies impact of SFR acquisition by Orange, Bouygues, and Free
The French telecommunications regulator, Arcep, has released an official FAQ to address concerns regarding the proposed €20.35 billion acquisition of SFR by Orange, Bouygues Telecom, and Free. The deal, outlined in a protocol signed in June 2026, remains subject to approval from the Competition Authority.
Arcep confirmed that SFR subscribers currently do not need to take any action, as the merger has not yet been validated. The regulatory review process is expected to last at least 18 months, meaning no changes are anticipated before late 2027 at the earliest. If the acquisition is approved, a 30-month transition period will follow to migrate customers, networks, and infrastructure.
Key assurances from the regulator include the guarantee of number portability for both fixed and mobile lines. While subscribers are expected to be transferred to one of the three acquiring operators, specific details regarding future pricing, equipment requirements, or service plans have not yet been determined.
