Archaeological discoveries at Alba Carolina Fortress

Archaeological excavations at the Alba Carolina Fortress in Alba Iulia have uncovered significant historical remains spanning approximately two millennia. Under the coordination of archaeologist Anca Timofan, the ‘Gates of the Millennia’ project aims to document the successive historical layers of the city's fortifications.

Key findings include elements from the Roman castrum of Apulum, such as the Porta Praetoria, Via Praetoria, Via Sagularis, and a gymnasium. The research also identified medieval fortifications, including city walls, the structures of St. George's Gate, and remains of a medieval tower. Additionally, traces of an 18th-19th century Franciscan monastery were discovered, illustrating the site's evolution from the Roman era through the medieval period to the modern Austrian administration period.
