Archaeological discoveries in Bulgaria reveal Roman and Medieval sites
Archaeologists in Bulgaria have uncovered significant historical sites at the ancient Roman citadel of Nove and the medieval fortress of Rusokastro.
At Nove in Northern Bulgaria, researchers have identified a monumental structure, approximately 4,500 square meters, that may have served as a 'praetorium'—the residence of a Roman legion commander. The site, which was a key military center for the Roman and later Byzantine Empires, features luxury elements unusual for a military camp, including a large private bath complex, frescoes, mosaics, and various artifacts such as bronze tableware and statues.
Near Burgas, excavations at the Rusokastro fortress have revealed a monumental medieval building located in the city's central district. The structure features thick walls and a pink waterproof plaster, suggesting the lower level may have functioned as a reservoir or storage facility. Alongside this architectural find, archaeologists recovered several valuable coins, including silver coins from the reign of Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Alexander (14th century) and Venetian silver groats.
