Archaeological discoveries reveal new details of ancient Athens and Minoan collapse

Recent archaeological findings in Greece and Turkey are providing new insights into ancient history. In Phaleron, near Athens, scientific analysis of 79 chained skeletons has revealed that the men buried in a mass grave were local Athenians rather than foreign invaders, as previously theorized. This discovery, involving strontium isotope analysis, challenges prior assumptions regarding the identity and violent deaths of these individuals.

Separately, the discovery of a teenager's skeleton on the coast of Turkey has provided a direct link to the tsunami caused by the eruption of Thera (Santorini). Radiocarbon dating of the remains places the volcanic eruption around 1500 BCE, approximately 100 years later than the previously estimated 1600 BCE. This finding supports the theory that the eruption played a decisive role in the decline of the Minoan civilization.
