Archaeological finds uncovered in northern Tarsus
Archaeological excavations in the mountainous areas north of the Tarsus district in Mersin are revealing significant prehistoric heritage. Led by the Middle Taurus Prehistoric Research (OTTA) team under the coordination of Assistant Professor Orkun Hamza Kaycı, the project focuses on documenting, mapping, and evaluating caves and rock shelters.
Findings include rock art and various stone tools crafted from materials such as flint and obsidian. These discoveries provide insights into prehistoric settlements, hunting practices, and technological activities in the region. The team is currently engaged in systematic recording, photography, and sampling to classify the finds and assess the area's archaeological potential.
Tarsus Mayor Ali Boltaç has expressed support for the project, emphasizing the importance of protecting the city's historical and cultural heritage through scientific methods. The research aims to fill gaps in the prehistoric history of the Middle Taurus region and establish a foundation for future conservation and more extensive studies.
