Archaeological remains found during roadworks in São Paulo

Road construction in the Liberdade neighborhood of São Paulo has uncovered archaeological remains linked to the city's Black history. During the second phase of the 'Ruas Abertas' municipal program, workers discovered human bone fragments and concentrations of ceramics, glass, and bovine bone.

Researchers from the company A Lasca identified these findings at the site of the former Cemitério dos Aflitos. One significant find, a potential femur fragment, was located approximately 30 centimeters below the surface on Thomaz Gonzaga Street. Other materials, including pottery and glass, were found near the intersection of Rua dos Estudantes and Rua Galvão Bueno.

The discoveries have caused temporary delays in the infrastructure project as specialists conduct more detailed excavations and analyses to understand the religious and historical significance of the site, which may be related to Afro-Brazilian religious practices.
