Archaeological sites discovered near Pilcaniyeu, Argentina

Archaeologists have discovered two previously unrecorded archaeological sites near Pilcaniyeu, in the steppe region of Río Negro, Argentina. The discovery was initiated after members of the National Gendarmerie (Escuadrón 34 Bariloche) reported the findings during a routine patrol.

The sites include caves containing significant rock art featuring red, white, and potentially green pigments. Researchers believe the red tones were likely created using hematite. In addition to the paintings, the area contains lithic tools and faunal remains, suggesting human occupation dating back at least 3,000 years.

A collaborative team including researchers from CONICET, the Universidad Nacional de Río Negro (UNRN), and the Río Negro Provincial Directorate of Heritage and Museums is conducting field investigations. The findings are expected to provide new insights into the ancient human settlement patterns of the region.
