Archaeological sites in Spain undergo excavation and conservation

Archaeological efforts are progressing at two distinct sites in Spain. In Tamajón, Guadalajara, the ninth excavation campaign at the El Abrigo de La Malia site has concluded. Led by researchers from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, the team of 15 discovered animal remains, tools, charcoal, and evidence of ancient hearths. Researchers are working through Paleolithic and prehistoric layers, with the potential to reach Neanderthal-era chronologies in future seasons.

In Almería, specialized teams are conducting maintenance and consolidation work at the Huércal la Vieja site in Huércal-Overa. Following excavations by the Universidad de Granada, current efforts focus on protecting the outdoor structure from weather damage, such as wind and rain, through waterproofing and sealing walls and pavements. The local government aims to restore the site to make it safe for public visits and to secure its designation as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC).
