Italy unveils various archaeological site restorations and guided tours

Several archaeological sites across Italy are being opened to the public through new restoration projects and guided tour initiatives.

In Canosa di Puglia, the Fondazione Archeologica Canosina has inaugurated the “Sotto la città” (Under the City) immersive experience at the via della Resistenza site. Funded in part by NextGenerationEU, the project uses multimedia projections, DMX lighting, and virtual guides to showcase the urban stratification of ancient Canusium, featuring Daunian hypogea and an Augustan-era Roman road.

Other regional developments include:

• Orte: The Roman river port of Seripola has undergone restoration via PNRR funding to improve accessibility and conservation of the ancient Tiber navigation site. • Trani: Palazzo Carcano is offering extraordinary guided tours of an archaeological area containing medieval structures and a Roman milestone, which will eventually be integrated into the future Cittadella della Giustizia. • Altamura: The “Cava dei Dinosauri” is resuming guided visits to showcase dinosaur footprints. • Rome: Special tours are being organized in the Campo Marzio area, including the Temple of the Nymphs and the Botteghe Oscure archaeological area.
