Archaeologist Antonio De Simone dies at 78
Renowned Italian archaeologist and professor Antonio De Simone has passed away at the age of 78. A professor at the Suor Orsola Benincasa University of Naples, De Simone was a leading figure in the study of the Vesuvian and Campanian territories.
His career was marked by significant excavations, most notably at the Villa Augustea in Somma Vesuviana, a project he began in 2002 in collaboration with a Japanese archaeological mission. His work helped expand the historical understanding of the region beyond the well-known sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, uncovering lesser-known Roman settlements and historical narratives.
De Simone was also recognized for his role in archaeological popularization. He was a mentor to broadcaster Alberto Angela and frequently appeared alongside him in television programs to discuss historical heritage and the importance of recovering historical memory.
