Archaeologist Charles K. Williams II dies at 96

Archaeologist Charles K. Williams II has passed away at the age of 96. He was a prominent figure in Greek archaeology, having dedicated much of his life to the excavations of ancient Corinth.

The American School of Classical Studies at Athens announced his death, noting his 64 years of active service to the institution. Williams served as the Director of the Corinth Excavations from 1966 to 1997. His research spanned various historical periods, from the Iron Age to the late Frankokratia.

Beyond his field research, Williams was noted for his commitment to education, training generations of archaeologists, philologists, and historians in excavation techniques and regional history. A dedicated Philhellene, he was recently granted citizenship in Corinth. At the time of his death, he was still actively working on a publication regarding Roman wall paintings in Corinth.
