Archaeologist discusses the historical legacy of Tsar Samuil

Archaeologist Methodi Zlatkov, a long-time researcher of the Bulgarian Middle Ages, has highlighted the historical significance of Tsar Samuil. Zlatkov’s involvement with the subject dates back to 2013, when he served as the secretary of the organizational committee for the 1,000th anniversary of Samuil’s death.

Through various exhibitions and a popular science book, Zlatkov has mapped over ten locations directly linked to Samuil’s life and the Bulgarian state’s conflicts with the Byzantine Empire. He describes Samuil as one of the most heroic and exceptional rulers in Bulgarian medieval history.

Zlatkov emphasizes that while the 50-year period of struggle ultimately resulted in military defeat and the loss of statehood, the era played a crucial role in shaping the nation. He notes that the struggle left a lasting impact on the people and served to strengthen Bulgarian national identity.
