Archaeologists discover 1,000-year-old noble grave in Russia

Researchers from the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the State Historical Museum have discovered a unique 10th-century chamber grave in the Gnezdilovo necropolis near Suzdal.

The rectangular wooden chamber, measuring approximately 3.1 by 2.7 meters, contained the remains of a man estimated to be between 25 and 35 years old. Found alongside the skeleton were several significant artifacts, including a silver horseshoe-shaped fibula, an iron knife, a war axe, a horn comb, and button-shaped weights.

In addition to the human remains, the grave contained the skeletons of a horse and a dog. Various equestrian items were also recovered, such as a spearhead, stirrups, a horse bit, and a saddle buckle. Based on the richness of the grave goods, archaeologists suspect the site may belong to a member of the nobility.
