Archaeologists discover ancient settlements along future D55 highway

Archaeologists conducting rescue research along the future D55 highway route between Kokory and Přerov have uncovered extensive evidence of human settlement spanning from the Neolithic period to the Middle Ages. The investigation, which lasted from September of last year to July of this year, involved the examination of 1,879 settlement objects and 65 skeletal and cremation graves.

Significant findings include the remains of Linear Pottery culture settlements dating back approximately 7,000 years, marking the arrival of the first farmers in Central Moravia. Researchers identified roughly 16 floor plans of long wooden houses, some reaching up to 36 meters in length, along with storage pits and ovens.

The research also revealed Bronze Age burial sites belonging to the Nitra and Únětice cultures, as well as a cremation cemetery from the Lusatian culture. Recovered artifacts include copper ornaments, bone beads, flint arrowheads, ceramic vessels, and bronze needles and bracelets. Additionally, the study confirmed 12 previously suspected archaeological sites and identified one entirely new location in the Dluhonice area.
