Archaeologists discover human remains in Sighetu Marmației
An archaeological team led by historian Gheorghe Petrov has uncovered human remains during excavations in the Sighetu Marmației area. The discovery is part of an ongoing effort to identify the final resting place of Iuliu Maniu, the former leader of the National Peasants' Party.
Maniu, a prominent figure in Romanian history, died in detention at Sighet Prison on February 5, 1953, during the communist regime's repression. For over seven decades, the exact location of his remains has remained unconfirmed. The current research was prompted by previously unverified testimonies.
Specialists are currently conducting forensic analyses to determine the origin of the bones. While the discovery is a significant development, officials have not yet confirmed if the remains belong to Maniu. If identified, the findings could lead to a symbolic repatriation and burial in Bădăcin, Sălaj, as he had originally wished.
