Archaeologists excavate ancient burial mounds in Ślipcze

Archaeologists are conducting excavations in Ślipcze, near Hrubieszów, uncovering a complex site with layers of history spanning over 5,000 years. Led by Dr. hab. Barbara Niezabitowska-Wiśniewska from the Institute of Archaeology at UMCS in Lublin, the team has identified artifacts from various eras, including Neolithic farmers, Germanic Goths, and early medieval Slavs.

A central focus of the research is a site known locally as ‘Mogiła Chrobrego’. While local legends once linked the mound to soldiers from 1018 or Gothic princesses, investigations have revealed that the site actually contains two distinct burial mounds built directly on top of one another. Recent findings include gold-foil beads, metal artifacts, and carefully preserved skeletal remains.
