Archaeologists uncover hidden Inca roads near Machu Picchu

A Polish-Peruvian archaeological team has discovered over 2.5 kilometres of previously unknown pre-Columbian roads near Machu Picchu. The structures, which include terraces, platforms, and circular formations, were located on the steep slopes of Mount Yanantin.

Researchers utilized drone-based LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology to penetrate the dense tropical forest canopy and identify subtle changes in terrain. While some narrow paths were known to local residents, the LiDAR scans revealed extensive zigzagging routes that suggest the area surrounding the Machu Picchu citadel was more developed than previously understood.

Lead researcher Bartłomiej Ćmielewski noted the difficulty of the terrain, where dense vegetation required the use of machetes to verify findings on the ground. Professor Mariusz Ziółkowski indicated that while the layout is consistent with Inca construction, the structures may potentially predate the Inca civilization. The team plans to continue their analysis and search the surrounding region.
